Chigger Bites, Why They Itch So Long and What Helps

Chigger bites show up hours after the walk through tall grass, in a ring around the ankles or along the waistband, and they itch for days. Here is what the bites look like, why they itch so long, why new ones keep appearing, whether chiggers carry disease and what helps.

Quick facts about chigger bites
  • Bites cluster where clothing is tight, at the sock line, the waistband, behind the knee and under the arm.
  • Itching usually starts within 3 to 6 hours of the bite and is worst at 24 to 48 hours.
  • Chiggers do not burrow into skin or drink blood. Their saliva dissolves skin cells.
  • Chiggers in the United States are not known to spread disease to people.
  • A warm, soapy shower with a good scrub within a few hours of being outside cuts down the bites.

What do chigger bites look like?

Chigger bites look like small, red, itchy welts, usually in a cluster. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says red patches and sometimes clear pustules or bumps follow the itch, and the skin can swell around the feeding chigger until it looks dug in. Ohio State University Extension says small red welts are common.

Where they are is the best clue. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension chigger guide says bites are most common where clothing is tight or the skin is thinnest, around the sock line on the ankles, the waist and the groin, and also behind the knee and under the armpit. Ohio State University Extension adds shoe straps and bra straps.

Chigger bites rarely land on open, uncovered skin, according to Ohio State. Bites on bare arms or a bare neck may be mosquitoes or biting flies, it says, which our article on why mosquito bites swell covers. Ohio State also says grass itself can raise tiny red welts on skin that brushed the blades. Bites around the ankles with no time in tall grass can be fleas, which our article on flea bites with no pets in the house explains.

Why do chigger bites itch so bad?

The itch is your skin reacting to chigger saliva. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says a chigger pierces the skin and injects a digestive enzyme that breaks down skin cells for food. Ohio State University Extension says the dissolved cells and saliva form a feeding tube, called a stylostome, that the larva drinks through.

Feeding often starts at the base of a hair follicle, Ohio State says, and how badly a bite itches varies from person to person. On people, the swelling can trap a chigger in the skin, where it dies, and the trapped mite can make the reaction worse. Ohio State says the lingering itch is mainly the skin reacting to the saliva, and a trapped mite can make it worse.

Do chiggers burrow into your skin?

No, burrowing is a myth. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Ohio State University Extension both say chiggers do not burrow into skin or suck blood. They feed on skin cells their saliva has dissolved, and the swelling skin can close around a feeding chigger, which makes it look as though it dug in.

Do chiggers stay in your skin? Rarely for long. Most chiggers are knocked off by moving, scratching or a shower long before they finish a meal, Ohio State says. On animals they feed for 2 to 4 days, Ohio State says, and the AgriLife guide puts it at about 3 days. The same guide says chiggers often do not survive more than 1 or 2 days on a person, because of the skin reaction and the scratching.

How long do chigger bites last?

Usually 1 to 2 weeks. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says itching starts within 3 to 6 hours of a bite, peaks at 24 to 48 hours, and redness and itching can last a week or more. Its City Bugs blog says the worst itch lasts 1 to 2 days, then the red marks take 1 or 2 weeks to fade.

The Ohio State fact sheet gives the itch up to 2 weeks or more. Clemson Extension says the itch is not felt until 3 or more hours after feeding starts and can last for several days or weeks.

Chigger bites from the first hour to the second week

The times come from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, its City Bugs blog and Ohio State University Extension.

A shower in the first few hours does the most good. After that, it is the itch you are treating.

Why do chigger bites keep showing up?

Because the itch runs hours behind the bite. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says chiggers often explore the body for several hours before choosing a spot to feed, and itching usually begins within 3 to 6 hours of the bite. So bites from one afternoon in tall grass can keep surfacing that evening, long after you came inside.

Clothes can carry a few more in. Clemson Extension says chiggers can cling to blankets and clothes that touched the ground, and Ohio State says to wash clothing on the hot setting to kill any left. If bites keep appearing night after night with no time in grass, they are probably not chiggers, and our article on the signs of bed bugs is the next place to look.

Do chiggers carry disease in Texas?

Not as far as anyone knows. Clemson Extension says chiggers found in the United States are not known to pass any disease to people, though some species in Asia and the Pacific carry scrub typhus. Texas A&M AgriLife’s City Bugs blog, from its Dallas center, says that as far as is known they do not carry disease.

The real risk is infection from scratching. The AgriLife guide says scratching only adds irritation and raises the risk of a secondary infection, and to put an antiseptic ointment on bites rubbed open by clothing or nails. Ohio State says scratches that become infected should be seen by a medical provider.

Does nail polish help chigger bites?

No. Nail polish is meant to smother a chigger in the skin, but chiggers do not burrow, so there is nothing under the polish to smother. Ohio State University Extension says to avoid folk remedies, because soap and water are enough to remove the mite, and to ask a pharmacist or medical professional about the itch.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says store-bought chigger bite products vary in how well they work, and often rely on numbing agents or on sealants that keep air off the bite. It also says pain relievers can ease the itch.

What helps chigger bites stop itching?

Start with a warm, soapy shower and a good scrub, as soon as you can. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says that can give some relief early in the itching phase. For the itch itself, it lists oral antihistamines, anti-itch creams with camphor and menthol, calamine or pramoxine, and hydrocortisone, plus an antiseptic on scratched bites.

The same guide says not to scratch a bump once it forms, so it does not open to infection. It also says people with severe reactions to chigger bites should see their doctor. Pest Me Off is a pest control company, not a medical provider, so for a bad reaction a doctor or pharmacist is the right call.

Five steps that save you from a week of chigger bites

  1. Before you go into tall grass or brush, put a DEET repellent on your shoes, socks and pant legs and around cuffs and waistbands, as Texas A&M advises. Ohio State also lists picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus repellents.
  2. For long jobs in brush, treat clothing with permethrin and let it dry first. The AgriLife guide says it lasts through several washings and must never go on skin.
  3. Tuck your pant legs into your socks or boots, and do not sit or lie on the ground, as Texas A&M advises.
  4. Shower within a few hours and scrub with a washcloth. Texas A&M says the sooner you shower, the fewer and milder the bites.
  5. Wash the clothes before wearing them again. Texas A&M says to launder them before the next wearing, and Ohio State says to use the hot setting.

When the bites come from your own yard

If you get bitten every time you use the back yard, the chiggers are living there, usually in the shaded, overgrown spots our article on chiggers in Texas yards explains how to find. Our guide to getting rid of chiggers in your yard covers what to do about them. Our flea and tick control visit starts by confirming what is biting, because fleas, ticks and chiggers each need a different emphasis.

The inspection and estimate are free. Our chigger control page explains the service, and the chigger page in our pest library shows how to tell a chigger bite from a flea or mosquito bite.
