The Pest Me Off difference

Why McKinney Homeowners Choose Pest Me Off for Chigger Control

Red, itchy bites around your sock line after an evening in the yard are almost always chiggers. Pest Me Off is a family-owned, Texas-licensed pest control company working in McKinney, Plano, Frisco and Allen since 2014. We ask where and when the bites happen and inspect the yard before we recommend anything.

Chiggers are patchy. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension notes that one spot can be crawling with them while a few steps away has almost none. So we map the areas in your yard that need attention and treat those, based on what we find.

How a chigger visit works

How our chigger control service works

Chiggers do not spread evenly across a yard. They wait in shade and damp soil with tall or thick plants, and the open, sunny lawn rarely has them. That is why our chigger service starts with an inspection. We ask where and when the bites happen, map the areas chiggers favor, treat the ones that need it, and explain what to cut back and clear.

1

Find the Hot Spots

Walk the whole yard

First we ask where your family spends time outside and when the bites happen: after mowing, near the fence, around the bushes or after a walk through an overgrown spot. Then we walk the yard and look at the tall grass, overgrown fence lines, brush and leaf litter, and the places where your kept yard meets overgrowth or open land. A bite alone does not tell us which pest it was, so we put the whole picture together before we recommend a treatment.

  • Where and when the bites happen, asked first
  • Tall grass, fence lines, brush and leaf litter checked
  • Signs of the rabbits, birds and other small animals chiggers ride in on
  • The whole picture, never the bite alone

Treat Where Chiggers Wait

The shaded edges, not the open lawn

Texas A&M says liquid sprays work better on chiggers than granules. We explain which areas we recommend treating and why, then treat those areas at ground level with a liquid product applied as the label directs. We do not fog the yard or mist around the house. Texas A&M says mowing first dries the soil surface and helps a spray reach them, so mow 1 to 2 days before the visit. Clear toys, pet bowls and other things you can move out of the treatment areas, keep pets inside, and make sure we can get to every area.

  • Ground-level liquid treatment on the mapped areas, as the label directs
  • Planned around site conditions, with label precautions to protect pollinators
  • People and pets stay out until it is dry

3

Make the Yard Harder for Chiggers

Your part, with our pointers

Chiggers need shade and damp soil. Short grass and trimmed plants let the sun dry the ground, which Texas A&M says makes a lawn less friendly to them. We explain what to cut back and clear, like tall grass, overgrowth and heavy leaf litter, because that work helps the treatment succeed. If your yard backs up to brush or open land behind the fence, that ground still matters after we treat. Itching from earlier bites can last after the chiggers are gone, so tell us about new activity and where it is happening, and we decide whether a follow-up is needed.

  • Grass kept short, especially along fences and edges
  • Brush, leaf piles and overgrown corners cleared
  • Bird feeders and open compost moved away from where the family sits and plays

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension explains that chiggers favor shaded, grassy and weedy ground, and that short grass and trimmed plants make a yard less friendly to them. The Texas A&M City Bugs team recommends mowing first and spraying in the evening to protect pollinators.

The Chigger in McKinney, Plano, Frisco & Allen

A chigger is the young stage of a tiny mite, related to ticks and spiders. Only the young ones bite, and they are smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. Read more in Chiggers in our pest library, or browse the whole pest library.

Identify

You almost never see the chigger itself. The sign is a cluster of small red bumps where clothing is tight, showing up hours after time in grass.

Where active

Shaded, damp, grassy or weedy ground, wooded edges, briar patches and creek banks. In a bad year Texas A&M has found them in kept lawns too.

When active

Late spring into fall in most of Texas. The Texas A&M City Bugs team finds them in its Dallas turf plots every year from around late May and early June.

The bite

Chiggers do not burrow and do not drink blood. They inject saliva that breaks down skin cells. The itch is worst for a day or two and can last a week or more.

Not a chigger

The larger red mites on a patio or lawn chair are usually clover mites or concrete mites, Ohio State University Extension notes. They do not bite people.

Our approach

Ask where and when the bites happen and inspect first, since a bite alone does not identify the pest. Treat the mapped grass, fence line and brush areas at ground level as the label directs, then explain what to cut back and clear.

Telling Chigger Bites From Flea and Mosquito Bites

Chiggers. Clusters of small red bumps where clothing is tight, around the ankles, the waist and behind the knees, after time in grass.

Fleas. Bites mostly on the ankles and lower legs, often with a pet scratching and dark specks in its bedding. See Flea and Tick Control.

Mosquitoes. Bites on open skin, the arms, neck and face, mostly around dusk. See Mosquito Control.

Keep chiggers off you

Chigger Prevention in McKinney TX Yards

Chiggers climb onto shoes and pant legs from tall grass and take hours to settle in before they bite. A few habits before and after time outside stop most bites, and a shorter, more open yard gives them fewer places to wait.

Before you walk through tall grass. Tuck pants into socks or boots. Put a bug repellent on shoes, socks and pant legs. Permethrin goes on clothing only, never on skin. Do not sit or lie on the grass in shaded spots.

When you come back inside. Shower with soap and scrub within a few hours. Chiggers take hours to settle in, so a shower knocks most of them off. Wash the clothes on hot before wearing them again.

Take away the shade and the tall edges. Keep grass short, especially along fences and where the lawn meets a greenbelt or creek. Clear brush, leaf piles and overgrown corners so the sun can dry the soil.

Draw fewer small animals. Chiggers ride in on rabbits, birds and other small animals. Move bird feeders and open compost away from where the family sits and plays, and close the gaps under decks and sheds.

Chigger questions

Chigger Control Questions

What are chiggers?+
Chiggers are the young stage of a tiny mite, related to ticks and spiders, not insects. Only the young ones bite, and they are too small to see without a magnifier. Adults are bright red, live in the soil and eat other tiny insects. In Texas the biting kind lives in shaded, grassy and weedy ground.
Do chiggers burrow into your skin?+
No. Texas A&M says chiggers neither burrow nor drink blood. They pierce the skin and inject saliva that breaks down skin cells, then feed on that. The skin swells around the spot, which makes it look as if something burrowed in. Most chiggers are scratched or washed off within a day.
How long do chigger bites itch?+
The itch usually starts 3 to 6 hours after the bite and is worst at 24 to 48 hours, according to Texas A&M. For some people the red bumps and itching last a week or more. Anti-itch creams and antihistamines help. See a doctor if a bite looks infected or the reaction is severe.
When is chigger season in Collin County?+
Chiggers bite from late spring into fall across most of Texas, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. The Texas A&M City Bugs team finds them in its Dallas turf plots every year from around late May and early June. In a bad year they also turn up in kept lawns, not only in tall grass and brush.
Where do chiggers live in my yard?+
In shade and damp soil with tall or thick plants. Look along fence lines, in tall grass edges, ground cover, deep mulch beds, brush and leaf piles, and where the yard meets a creek or greenbelt. They are patchy, so one corner can be heavy while the open sunny lawn has almost none.
Can chiggers live in my house or bed?+
Not for long. Chiggers need damp soil and an animal host to finish growing, and Texas A&M says they seldom survive on a person more than a day or two. You can carry a few inside on clothing, so wash clothes on hot after time in tall grass and shower soon after.
Is the red bug on my patio a chigger?+
Probably not. Ohio State University Extension notes that larger red mites seen on patios, concrete and lawn furniture, such as clover mites and concrete mites, are often blamed for chigger bites. They do not bite people. Biting chiggers are too small to see without a magnifier, so you feel the bites long before you spot one.
How does Pest Me Off treat a yard for chiggers?+
We start by asking where and when the bites happen, then we inspect the yard, because a bite alone does not tell us which pest it was. We treat the grass, fence line and brush areas we mapped, where your kept yard meets overgrowth, with a ground-level liquid treatment applied as the label directs. We do not fog the yard or mist around the house. Before we leave, we explain what to cut back and clear.
Is the chigger treatment safe for kids and pets?+
Everything we use is registered with the EPA and applied as the label directs. People and pets stay out of the treated areas until they are dry. Before the visit we tell you how to get the yard ready, and before we leave we tell you which areas were treated, so you know where to wait.
