Drugstore Beetles in Collin County, TX | Identification and Control
The drugstore beetle (Stegobium paniceum) is a tiny reddish brown beetle that breeds inside dry food, spices, pet food and even pills. Oklahoma State University puts the adult at about 1/10 inch long. The beetles you see at the kitchen window are only the sign. The grubs are feeding out of sight in a package nearby, and that package is what has to go.

Drugstore Beetle
The drugstore beetle is one of the most common beetles found in home pantries, and it eats far more than pantry food. The University of Florida’s Featured Creatures profile says it got its name from feeding on prescription drugs.

What Does a Drugstore Beetle Look Like?
A tiny, even brown beetle, longer than it is wide, with lined wing covers and thick tips on its antennae
An adult drugstore beetle is a small, cylinder shaped beetle in a single shade of light brown to reddish brown, covered in fine silky hairs. Its head bends down under the front of its body, so from above you barely see it. Oklahoma State University’s fact sheet puts the adult at about 1/10 inch long, and the University of Florida measures it at 2.25 to 3.5 mm.
Two details under a magnifying glass make the identification. The wing covers carry rows of tiny pits that look like fine lines running the length of the back, and each antenna ends in three enlarged segments, like a small club. Penn State Extension adds that the adults are very active and move with a quick, skittering run. The young are small, creamy white, C shaped grubs that stay inside the food.
How to identify a drugstore beetle by its lined wing covers and club tipped antennae, with the holes, grubs and window sightings it leaves behind
- Tiny brown beetles on kitchen windowsills and around light fixtures
- Pinholes in boxes and bags of flour, spices, pasta or pet food
- Beetles or white grubs in a spice jar, pill bottle or supplement container
- Fine powder under an old package at the back of a shelf
- Small round holes in old books, dried flower arrangements or leather
- Lines along the wing covers and a club at the end of each antenna
Other Names for the Drugstore Beetle
The drugstore name comes from the beetle’s old habit of living in pharmacies. The University of Florida’s profile says it feeds on prescription drugs and notes that in the United Kingdom it is called the biscuit beetle. The scientific name Stegobium paniceum points the same way, toward bread and flour, which the University of Kentucky’s pantry pest fact sheet lists among the foods it is most often found in.
The name that causes the most confusion is cigarette beetle. That is a close cousin of almost the same size and color, and the two are often found in the same pantries. The look-alike table below shows how to tell them apart.
| Name | What it means |
|---|---|
| Biscuit beetle | The name used in the United Kingdom. |
| Bread beetle | For the bread, flour and dry mixes it lives in. |
| Pantry beetle | A catch-all name for small beetles in dry food. |
| Cigarette beetle | A different beetle with smooth wing covers. |
How to Tell a Drugstore Beetle from a Cigarette Beetle, Grain Beetle or Carpet Beetle
All four are tiny brown or dark beetles that turn up indoors in Collin County, and the right fix depends on which one it is. Pantry beetles are found by the food they breed in, while a carpet beetle points to wool, rugs and closets. The wing covers, the antennae and where the beetles gather tell them apart.

Do Drugstore Beetles Bite?
No. A drugstore beetle has no sting and no venom, and none of the university fact sheets we read for this page records it biting people or pets or carrying a disease. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s guide to pantry and fabric pests notes that the adults do not even feed. They fly about and lay eggs on food, and the grubs that hatch do the eating.
Is It Safe to Eat Food Drugstore Beetles Got Into?
A few beetles eaten by accident will not hurt you, but an infested package is not worth keeping. Oklahoma State University’s fact sheet says the insect bits left in food are not harmful if eaten. The University of California’s pantry pest guide adds that pantry pests can carry microbes into stored food, especially in warm, humid storage, and some beetle grubs leave a bad smell and taste behind. Throw out anything with beetles, grubs or fine powder in it.
Can Drugstore Beetles Get Into Medicine?
Yes, it is how they got their name. Oklahoma State University’s fact sheet says they feed on many drugs, including poisonous ones such as belladonna and strychnine, and the University of California names drugs, pet food and cereal as what they infest most in homes. Check pill bottles, vitamins, supplements and dried herbs near any sighting, throw out anything with beetles inside, and ask your pharmacist about replacing a prescription.
When Drugstore Beetle Activity Needs Fast Action
Beetles in Pills or Supplements
Beetles or grubs in a pill bottle, vitamin jar or supplement container mean it is contaminated. Throw it out and ask your pharmacist about a replacement.
Beetles in Every Room
Beetles at windows well away from the kitchen usually mean an old, heavy source has been breeding for months, or more than one.
Beetles in the Pet Food
Dry pet food and birdseed are among the most common sources. Bag the infested food, take it outside and clean the bin before refilling it.
A Few Beetles by One Jar
A handful of beetles near one spice jar or box is usually a single infested item. Find it, throw it out and watch for more.
Why You Have Drugstore Beetles in Your House
Drugstore beetles almost always come home inside something you bought. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s guide to pantry and fabric pests says food pests are usually brought home from the grocery or pet store, that even unopened containers may be infested, and that the infested package is usually the oldest and hardest to reach in the pantry. The beetles can fly, Oklahoma State notes, but usually travel in infested goods.
Once one package is infested, the adults fly off to find more food, and the University of Kentucky’s fact sheet notes that the source is often a half-used box or bag forgotten at the back of a shelf. Old pet food, birdseed, spice collections, dried flower arrangements and a stored bag of flour all keep them going. It is not a sign of a dirty kitchen. A tidy pantry with one forgotten package is enough.
Where Drugstore Beetles Live in Collin County Homes
Drugstore beetles live inside what they eat. The University of Florida’s profile lists flour, dry mixes, bread, cookies, chocolate, spices and prescription drugs, and outside the kitchen wool, hair, leather, books and wooden objects. Oklahoma State adds dry dog food, coffee beans, pasta, powdered milk and dried flowers. In a home that means the pantry, the spice rack, the medicine cabinet, the pet food bin in the garage and the bookshelf.
Drugstore Beetle Pressure Across Collin County
Drugstore beetles show up in our service notes in Allen pantries, and pantry beetles of every kind in McKinney, Frisco and Celina. Because they ride in on groceries, they are not tied to one neighborhood or to older homes. New builds get them as often as anyone.
The homes that see them most keep dry goods for a long time. Bulk flour and rice, a big spice collection, pet food and birdseed stored for months, and old cookbooks or dried flowers all give a few beetles the time to become many.
Drugstore beetles breed all year inside Collin County homes. The University of Florida says they develop between 60 and 93 degrees F and best near 85, so warm summer pantries and garages speed them up, and our pantry beetle calls run highest from summer into fall.
Pattern from the University of Florida’s published development temperatures and Pest Me Off pantry beetle calls, which climb from summer into fall.
Why Drugstore Beetles Keep Coming Back
How Pest Me Off Gets Rid of Drugstore Beetles
Drugstore beetle control is four steps, every job. Spraying the beetles at the window is not one of them, because the next ones are already growing inside a package.
Inspect and Identify
A free inspection. We confirm it is a drugstore beetle and not a cigarette beetle or grain beetle, then open the whole pantry and check the spice rack, the medicine cabinet, the pet food and birdseed in the garage, and anything dried or old nearby.
Remove Every Source
Every infested package is pulled, including sealed bags that look fine from outside, and the infested food is bagged and taken out of the house before any treatment goes down.
Treat the Cracks, Never the Food
A targeted indoor treatment worked into shelf cracks, corners and crevices, never sprayed across food surfaces, and our Scorched Earth Barrier at the exterior entry points.
Defend Year-Round
We point out the open packaging and old stock that let them in. Homes that buy in bulk or store pet food and birdseed can add quarterly visits, with a pantry check every time.

How to Get Rid of Drugstore Beetles Yourself
Most drugstore beetle problems can be fixed by hand. The University of Florida’s profile calls finding the source the first and most important step, with sprays used only as a last resort.
Why Some DIY Responses Fail for Drugstore Beetles
Most DIY drugstore beetle trouble comes from killing the beetles you can see while the source keeps breeding, or from checking only the kitchen pantry.
Spraying Shelves and Food
Oklahoma State University notes that sprays do not reach insects inside food packages, and the University of California warns that spraying on or near food can do more harm to your family than the beetles.
Bug Bombs
Texas A&M says fogs can knock down flying adults for a while but will not kill pantry pests inside food containers or other protected places.
Traps Alone
Sticky traps baited with the female’s scent catch only males, the University of Florida notes, so they show where beetles are but do not end the infestation.
