Clover Mite Control in McKinney TX
Serving McKinney, Plano, Frisco, Allen and across Collin County.

Why McKinney Homeowners Choose Pest Me Off for Clover Mite Control
Hundreds of tiny red specks crawling over a sunny wall, the patio or the inside of a windowsill are usually clover mites, the tiny red bugs, little red bugs or red mites many people call them. Pest Me Off is a family-owned, Texas-licensed pest control company working in McKinney, Plano, Frisco and Allen since 2014. We ask where and when you see them, inspect, and explain what we found before we recommend anything.
Clover mites favor the sunny side of a home. Penn State Extension says they are often found on windowsills on the sunny side, and Colorado State University Extension says south-facing walls usually have more of them. So we look at where they gather and how they get in, then explain what we recommend and why.
How our clover mite control service works
Clover mites live in the lawn and climb the walls of the house. Penn State Extension says their eggs spend the winter in cracks in concrete, under tree bark and between the walls of buildings. That is why our clover mite service starts with questions and an inspection. We ask where and when you see them, look at where the lawn meets the foundation, and explain what we found and what we recommend before any work.

Find Where They Gather
First we ask where you see the tiny red bugs, how many, and whether they are inside, outside or both. Then we look at the sunny walls, the windowsills and the doors on that side, and at where the lawn runs up to the foundation. Penn State Extension says how close the lawn sits to the house appears to play a part in how likely an invasion is, so we put the whole picture together before we recommend anything.
- Where and when you see them, asked first
- Sunny walls, windowsills and doors checked
- Where the lawn meets the foundation
- Cracks in the slab and walkways, where Penn State says the eggs spend the winter
Explain What We Found
We tell you what we found, what we recommend and why, and what you can do yourself, before any work is done. A handful on the patio may need nothing more than the prevention steps further down. Thousands on the walls and coming in at every window is a different conversation, and we walk you through the options.

- What we recommend and why
- What you can do yourself
Make the Foundation Harder to Cross
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension suggests a strip at least 3 to 5 feet wide around the building with no grass or weeds, covered in pea gravel or mulch, and window seals kept in good repair. Penn State Extension says even pulling the grass back 6 to 24 inches from the foundation acts as a deterrent. We explain where a strip like that would help most on your house.
- A strip along the foundation with no grass or weeds
- Pea gravel or mulch in the strip
- Seals around windows kept in good repair
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s Insects in the City blog lists a strip with no grass or weeds, sound window seals and a handheld vacuum indoors among its clover mite steps. Penn State Extension says there is no need to treat inside the home with a chemical, because clover mites die indoors within a few days.
The Clover Mite in McKinney, Plano, Frisco & Allen
A clover mite is a tiny plant-feeding mite, a close relative of ticks and spiders, and it does not bite. Oklahoma State University Extension says it is about 1/30 inch long with 8 legs. Read more in Clover Mites in our pest library, or browse the whole pest library.
Reddish or greenish dots that walk quickly. Texas A&M says the front legs are nearly twice the length of the others and stick out past the head.
In the lawn beside the house and on sunny walls, windowsills and doors. Texas A&M says they are more likely on heavily fertilized lawns.
Texas A&M says they prefer about 50 to 80 degrees, so they are most active in spring and fall, and go quiet once it passes about 85 degrees.
There is none. Penn State Extension says clover mites do not attack people, and Texas A&M says they carry no disease and do not damage food or the house.
Chiggers are a different mite. Texas A&M says the biting chigger is about 1/100 inch across and waits in shaded soil under plants. See chiggers in our pest library.
Our approachAsk where and when you see them, and inspect the sunny walls, the windows and the lawn edge first. Then explain what we found and what we recommend, before any work.
Telling Clover Mites From Chiggers and Other Mites
Clover mites. Red or greenish dots you can watch walking on sunny walls, windowsills and the patio, with front legs much longer than the rest. Colorado State University Extension says they do not bite people.
Chiggers. Texas A&M says the biting chigger is about 1/100 inch and lives in shaded soil under grass and brush, and that bites show up where clothing is tight. See Chigger Control.
Banks grass mites. Colorado State University Extension says this turf mite is smaller and lighter, green most of the season, and lacks the clover mite’s long front legs. It damages dry, stressed grass.
Clover Mite Prevention in McKinney TX Homes
Clover mites come up from the lawn and in at the sunny windows and doors. A few steps inside, and a bare strip outside, cut down how many reach the rooms you live in.
Vacuum them, do not crush them. Texas A&M says wiping them up leaves a smear that stains fabrics and walls, so use a handheld vacuum and empty it straight away. Penn State says there is no need to treat inside the home with a chemical, because they die indoors within a few days.
Close the way in. Texas A&M says to keep the seals around windows in good repair. Utah State University Extension says a strip of double-sided carpet tape placed as a barrier can cut the numbers coming into a building.
We inspect where they gather and how they get in, then explain what we recommend. The inspection and estimate are free.
Get a free estimatePut a bare strip along the foundation. Texas A&M and Utah State suggest a strip at least 3 to 5 feet wide with no grass or weeds, covered in pea gravel or mulch. Colorado State says clover mites almost always come in on the sunny south and west sides, so a barrier there counts most.
Plant what they do not like. Texas A&M lists geranium, chrysanthemum, zinnia, marigold, salvia, rose and petunia, and the shrubs barberry, juniper and yew, as plants clover mites find unattractive. It adds that mowing, weeding and a strong spray from a hose can cut their numbers.

Penn State Extension says how close the lawn sits to the house, and how well fed it is, appear to govern how likely a clover mite invasion is. We work across all 14 service cities.

In Stonebriar, Hollyhock and Phillips Creek Ranch, a well-fed lawn against a south or west wall is the setup to watch. Texas A&M says clover mites are more likely on heavily fertilized lawns.
