Cat Fleas in Collin County, TX | Identification and Control

Last updated October 2026

The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the flea behind nearly every flea problem in Texas, on dogs as well as cats, and it bites people too, mostly around the ankles. The adults ride on the pet, but their eggs fall off into carpet, bedding and shady soil. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says a female lays an average of 27 eggs a day, which is why fleas come back when only the pet is treated.

What Does a Cat Flea Look Like?

A tiny, wingless, reddish brown insect, flat from side to side, that jumps

An adult cat flea is about 1/8 inch long, reddish brown to black and has no wings. It is flattened from side to side, so from above it looks thin, as if it walks on edge, and it slips easily through fur. The University of Florida’s Featured Creatures profile of the cat flea puts an adult at 1 to 3 mm, with powerful back legs for running and jumping. Backward-pointing bristles and a comb of stiff spines behind the head help it hold on when the pet scratches or grooms.

Most people notice what fleas leave before they get a good look at one. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s guide to controlling fleas describes flea droppings as a fine, reddish black dust in pet fur and bedding, made of partly digested blood, and flea bites as small, red, itchy bumps, usually on the ankles and lower legs. The eggs are white and about 0.5 mm long, but the University of Florida says they are nearly impossible to see against carpet or bedding.

Other Names

Other Names for the Cat Flea

Despite the name, the cat flea is not only a cat problem. It feeds on cats, dogs and wildlife, as the Texas A&M flea guide puts it, so most people simply call it a flea. The scientific name Ctenocephalides felis means the comb-headed flea of the cat, after the rows of spines on its head. In Spanish it is the pulga del gato.

The name that causes the most confusion is dog flea. The fleas on a Texas dog are almost always cat fleas, and the true dog flea is a separate species the University of Florida says is rarely found in the United States. The look-alike table below shows how the two compare.

How to Tell a Cat Flea from a Dog Flea or Bed Bug

Fleas and bed bugs both leave itchy bites and dark specks, and the right fix depends on which one it is. Fleas live on the pet and in the carpet and yard around it, while bed bugs hide in the bed and feed on people at night. How the insect moves, its shape and where the bites are tell them apart.

Cat Flea AKA: Flea, Pulga del Gato Ctenocephalides felis This species
About 1/8 inch, 1 to 3 mm. Reddish brown to black. Flat from side to side, no wings, long back legs, and it jumps. Bites cluster on the ankles and lower legs. On dogs, cats and wildlife, and in carpet, pet bedding and shady soil where pets rest.
Photo of a dog flea
Dog Flea AKA: Flea Ctenocephalides canis
The same size and color as the cat flea. Looks almost the same. The small difference in the head shows only under high magnification. Rarely found in the United States. It is the common dog flea in Europe.
Photo of a bed bug
Bed Bug AKA: Bedbug, Chinche Cimex lectularius
5 to 7 mm, about the size of an apple seed. Reddish brown. Flat from top to bottom like a seed. It crawls but never jumps, and bites arms, neck and face at night. Mattress seams, box springs, headboards and couches, close to where people sleep or sit.

Cat Flea vs Dog Flea

A cat flea and a dog flea look so alike that the University of Florida says only a slight difference under high magnification separates them. You do not need a microscope to know which one is on your dog in Collin County. The University of Florida’s profile says cat fleas are the ones found on both cats and dogs in North America, while dog fleas are found in Europe and rarely in the United States, so the flea on your dog is almost always a cat flea. Both are treated the same way.

The Cat Flea in Three Numbers

1 or 2 bites

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says as few as 1 or 2 cat flea bites can cause severe itching and scratching in a pet that is allergic to flea bites.

Why Cat Fleas Score 2 of 3 on People Risk

People Risk for Cat Fleas

Cat flea bites itch and can set off allergic reactions in people and pets, and the flea can carry the germs of flea-borne typhus, cat scratch disease and dog tapeworm, though illness from them is uncommon and treatable.

Do Cat Fleas Bite People?

Yes, though they would rather feed on an animal. According to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, cat fleas do not normally live on people but do bite people who handle infested pets, leaving small, red, itchy bumps, usually on the ankles and lower legs. People who are allergic to flea bites can get hives, rashes or itching all over, usually 12 to 24 hours after a bite, lasting a week or more. The CDC’s flea prevention page says the best way to keep fleas off people is to keep pets free of fleas, and long socks and pants protect the lower legs where most bites land.

Are Cat Fleas Dangerous?

Sometimes, mostly for the germs in their droppings. The CDC’s page on flea-borne typhus says the cat flea is one of the two fleas that most often spread it, that fleas pick it up from rats, cats and opossums, and that most United States cases are reported from southern California, Hawaii and southern Texas. Infected flea dirt rubbed into a bite or scratch causes the infection. Fever, chills, headache, body aches and sometimes a rash start 3 to 14 days later, deaths are rare at under 1 percent of cases, and the antibiotic doxycycline treats it. See a doctor about any fever that follows flea bites, and mention the fleas.

Can You Get Tapeworms From Fleas?

You can, by swallowing an infected flea. The CDC’s page on the dog and cat tapeworm says pets catch it when they swallow a flea while grooming, that people catch it the same way, and that most reported cases are in children. The tapeworm’s segments look like grains of rice near the pet’s tail or in its droppings, and it is easily treated in pets and people. Cat fleas also spread the germ behind cat scratch disease, which the CDC’s Bartonella page says reaches people through the scratch of a cat that has fleas.

Are Cat Fleas Dangerous to Pets?

They are hardest on pets that are allergic to them. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says as few as 1 or 2 bites can cause severe itching and scratching in an allergic pet, and that heavily infested dogs and cats scratch constantly, leaving their coats soiled and rough. Fleas also give pets tapeworm when they swallow them while grooming. Your veterinarian is the one to treat the pet itself.

Context

When Cat Flea Activity Needs Fast Action

High Priority

A Fever After Flea Bites

Fever, chills, headache or a rash in the 2 weeks after flea bites can be flea-borne typhus. See your doctor and tell them about the fleas.

High Priority

A Pet That Will Not Stop Scratching

Constant scratching, chewing and a rough coat can mean a flea allergy. Take the pet to the vet and treat the home at the same time.

Moderate

Rice-Like Segments on a Pet

White segments near the tail or in bedding mean tapeworm from swallowed fleas. The vet treats the pet, and children should wash hands after play.

Moderate

Flea Bites With No Pets at Home

Fleas in a home with no pets usually come from wildlife or rats nesting in or under the house. The animals have to be found as well as the fleas.

Indoors

Why You Have Cat Fleas in Your House

Most cat fleas ride in on a dog or cat that picked them up in a shady part of the yard, on a walk or from wildlife. Opossums, raccoons, stray cats and rats carry fleas into yards, and the University of Florida advises keeping those animals out for exactly that reason. Once a flea is on the pet it stays there, feeding and laying eggs, and the eggs roll off wherever the pet rests. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says the young fleas are usually found under furniture and in pet bedding, where they feed on the dried blood adult fleas leave behind.

A home with no pets can still get fleas. The same Texas A&M guide says bats, roof rats, squirrels, raccoons and stray dogs and cats nesting in a building can be the source, and that a home left empty for a while can come alive with fleas when people move in, because fully formed fleas wait in their cocoons for someone to walk by. It is not a sign of a dirty home. A clean house with a pet, or with an opossum under the deck, can have fleas.

Why Cat Fleas Score 1 of 3 on Property Risk

Property Risk for Cat Fleas

Cat fleas do no damage to the house itself. The cost is the carpet, furniture, pet bedding and cars they settle into, which all have to be cleaned and treated together.

Habitat

Where Cat Fleas Live Around Collin County Homes

Cat fleas live where pets rest, indoors and out. The Texas A&M flea guide says fleas do not survive well in hot, sunny lawns, that dry air or soil hotter than 95 degrees kills the young, and that moist, shady spots near pet resting areas are where to find them. The University of Florida adds that the young need damp air and temperatures of 70 to 90 degrees, out of the sun and the sprinklers, which is why carpet in a cool house suits them all year.

Local Presence

Cat Flea Pressure Across Collin County

Flea calls show up in our service notes most in McKinney, then Frisco, Allen and Plano, in houses, apartments, schools and child care centers alike. Homes with pets, shady yards and wildlife nearby give them the shade and steady hosts that Texas A&M and the University of Florida describe.

In Princeton, Prosper and Farmersville we often treat the lawn along with the house, where fleas and ticks share the yard edges pets patrol.

Why Cat Fleas Score 3 of 3 on Persistence Risk

Cat Flea Biology and Seasonal Presence

Cat fleas lay eggs every day, the young grow up in the carpet and yard rather than on the pet, and a flea waiting in its cocoon can sit out a treatment and hatch weeks later, so one spray rarely ends it.

Behavior and Biology

Why Cat Fleas Keep Coming Back

Eggs An average of 27 a day Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says a female starts laying within 2 days of her first blood meal and averages 27 eggs a day, drinking about 15 times her own weight in blood daily. The smooth, dry eggs fall off the pet into carpet and bedding.
Cocoon Waits up to 5 months Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says a fully formed flea can stay in its cocoon for up to 5 months and come out within seconds when an animal passes. The cocoons are hard to kill with sprays, so fleas keep hatching after a treatment.
Young Live in the carpet, not on the pet The young are white, legless and wormlike. They feed on the dried blood adult fleas pass, so a pet with fleas keeps feeding the next generation in its bedding.
Growth Usually 30 to 75 days, egg to adult The University of Florida gives the usual life cycle as 30 to 75 days, depending on warmth and humidity. The University of California’s flea guide says it can take as little as 18 days at normal room temperature.

How Pest Me Off Gets Rid of Cat Fleas

Cat flea control is four steps, every job. The fleas you can see are the smallest part of it, because most of the problem is eggs, young fleas and cocoons in the carpet and the yard.

Step 1

Inspect and Identify

A free inspection of the rooms where pets rest and the shady parts of the yard. We confirm it is fleas and not ticks, bed bugs or chiggers, and find the hot spots and any wildlife using the yard.

Why this step: Fleas, ticks and chiggers each need a different plan, and treating for the wrong biter fixes nothing.
Step 2

Treat Inside the Home

We flush out the live fleas and treat the carpet, rugs, pet resting spots, under furniture and along baseboards, with a growth-stopper so the eggs already in the carpet never reach biting age.

Why this step: The eggs and young fleas are in the carpet and bedding, not on the pet.
Step 3

Treat the Yard the Same Visit

On the same visit we treat the shady pet runs, fence lines, leaf litter and the ground under decks and shrubs, with granules worked into the shaded beds a spray cannot reach.

Why this step: Fleas in a shady yard keep reseeding the house every time the pet goes out.
Step 4

Line Up the Pet and Follow Up

We time the visit with the flea treatment your vet puts on the pet, so all three turn over together. On a recurring plan we come back to catch the fleas that hatch late from their cocoons.

Why this step: Cocoons survive the first treatment, so a second round is what ends the cycle.
Pest Me Off
Confirm it is fleas, treat the carpet and pet zones inside and the shady yard on the same visit, and line it up with your vet’s treatment on the pet.

Do It Yourself
DIY Steps That Keep Cat Fleas Away and Steps That Backfire
Vacuuming, washing bedding and treating every pet works, while bombs, dog products on cats and home remedies make it worse
DIY Management

How to Get Rid of Cat Fleas Yourself

The CDC’s guide to getting rid of fleas puts cleaning, treating every pet and treating the home at the same time ahead of everything else, then a follow-up.

1
Vacuum hard and often. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says vacuuming removes up to 30 percent of the young fleas and up to 60 percent of the eggs in a carpet. Vacuum under furniture, cushions and along walls, and empty the bag or canister outside.
2
Wash bedding and treat every pet. Wash pet bedding, rugs and throws, bathe and comb the pets, and ask your vet for a flea product for every dog and cat in the house, year-round.
3
Take away the shade and the visitors. Mow often, rake out leaf litter and avoid overwatering, since fleas avoid sun and dry ground. Keep pet food inside, lids on trash and holes under decks closed so opossums and strays move on.
DIY Pitfalls

Why Some DIY Responses Fail for Cat Fleas

Most DIY flea trouble comes from treating only one of the three places fleas live, using the wrong product on a cat, or trusting remedies the studies say do little.

Fleas Come Back

Treating Only the Pet

The University of Florida calls removing fleas from the animal alone futile. Fleas keep hatching in the carpet and jump straight back on.

Puts Pets at Risk

Dog Products on a Cat

Texas A&M warns that products safe for dogs may not be safe for cats, puppies or kittens, and the CDC says permethrin should not be used on cats. Read the label.

Rarely Works

Bombs, Collars and Home Remedies

The University of Florida found ultrasonic and insecticidal flea collars not very effective and garlic and brewer’s yeast of little value. A flea bomb misses the cocoons deep in the carpet.

Operational Questions

Common Cat Flea Questions

What is a cat flea, and what does it look like?
The cat flea is the common flea on pets in Texas, a tiny insect that lives on dogs, cats and wildlife and drinks their blood. An adult is about 1/8 inch long, 1 to 3 mm, reddish brown to black, with no wings, a body flattened from side to side and long back legs for jumping.
Is the flea on my dog a cat flea?
Almost certainly. Most flea problems in Texas are caused by the cat flea, according to Texas A&M, which feeds on cats, dogs and wildlife. The true dog flea looks nearly the same, but the University of Florida says it is rarely found in the United States.
Do cat fleas bite humans?
Yes. They prefer animals but bite people who share space with infested pets, leaving small, red, itchy bumps, usually on the ankles and lower legs. In people allergic to flea bites, hives or a rash usually appears 12 to 24 hours after a bite and can last a week or more.
Can cat fleas live on people or in human hair?
No. Cat fleas do not normally live on people, according to Texas A&M. They bite and jump off, and they need an animal such as a dog, cat or opossum to keep breeding. Fleas biting you every day mean fleas are living on a pet or in the carpet nearby.
Are cat fleas dangerous to pets?
They can be. In a pet allergic to fleas, as few as 1 or 2 bites can cause severe itching and scratching, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. Heavily infested pets scratch constantly and their coats turn rough, and pets that swallow fleas while grooming can get tapeworm. Your vet treats the pet.
Can you get sick from cat fleas?
Rarely, but yes. The CDC says cat fleas spread flea-borne typhus, which most often shows up in the United States in southern California, Hawaii and southern Texas, and the germ behind cat scratch disease. Swallowing an infected flea can also give a person, usually a child, the dog and cat tapeworm. All three are treatable.
What is flea dirt?
Flea dirt is flea droppings, a fine, reddish black dust made of partly digested blood that collects in pet fur and bedding. Young fleas feed on it, and the CDC says it can carry the germ of flea-borne typhus. Black specks in the fur near a pet’s tail are a strong sign of fleas.
Why do I have fleas if I do not have pets?
Usually wildlife. Bats, roof rats, squirrels, raccoons and stray dogs and cats nesting in or under a building can be the source, Texas A&M notes. Fleas left by a previous owner’s pets can also wait in the carpet in their cocoons for months, then hatch when people move in.
Why did fleas show up after we came home from a trip?
The fleas were already there, waiting in their cocoons. A fully formed flea can stay in its cocoon for up to 5 months and come out within seconds when an animal passes, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, which is why an empty home can come alive with fleas the day people walk back in.
How long do cat fleas live?
On a pet, an adult can live for weeks, but without a host adults live only a few days to 2 weeks, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. The whole cycle from egg to adult usually takes 30 to 75 days, the University of Florida says, so a home can keep producing fleas for months.
Do flea bombs work?
Not on their own. The fog settles on open surfaces and does not reach deep carpet, under furniture or the cocoons, and it does nothing for the pet or the yard. Fleas keep hatching in the weeks after, so the biting comes back.
How do I get rid of cat fleas?
Treat the pet, the home and the yard at the same time. Have your vet treat every pet, vacuum and wash bedding, treat the carpet and pet resting spots with a product that stops the eggs from growing, and treat the shady yard spots where pets lie. The CDC says follow-up treatment is needed, because fleas in their cocoons survive the first round.
